Goody's supports LIFESPAN

Local nonprofit LIFESPAN does not make a lot of noise. Its campus sits quietly behind Central Elementary in Albemarle and assists those with learning disabilities without demanding much attention. “I don’t think many people even realize it’s there,” Amity Foreman, of Goody’s in Albemarle, said. “They do so much and never ask for the spotlight.” To bring the group some local recognition, and much needed funds, her store will host a fundraiser throughout April for the organization. All patrons who come in during that time will have the option to donate money with their purchase. Those that do will receive a 30 percent off coupon. “This is part of an ongoing community support effort that’s been going on for the past three years,” Brittany Mauldin, of Goody’s, said. Between holiday fundraisers and other seasonal efforts, they have raised as much as $1,500 in a single year for local nonprofits such as Toys for Tots, Esther House and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “We’re hoping we can top that this year,” Mauldin said. Staff members have set the goal of raising $1,000 during their April fundraiser. All proceeds from that will go directly to LIFESPAN’s local branch in Albemarle. Staff will also hand out fliers about the nonprofit’s work in the community and make an effort to promote them vocally. “Sometimes people are leery of giving to big, national charities,” Foreman said. “But LIFESPAN is working right here in the community, so we’re excited about sharing that, too.” To find out more about LIFESPAN, visit www.lifespanservices.or g and select “Albemarle” under the “Locations” tab.
